About Word Guess — Free 5-Letter Word Puzzle Game Online

Word Guess is a fast, addictive word puzzle in the style of the famous five-letter guessing game. A secret word is chosen and you have six tries to find it. Every guess has to be a real five-letter word — type it in and the board tells you, color by color, how close you got.

After each guess the tiles flip and change color. Green means the letter is correct and in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but somewhere else. Gray means the letter is not in the word at all. The on-screen keyboard colors itself too, so you always have a clear record of what you have tested and ruled out.

Unlike the once-a-day original, Word Guess is unlimited — start a new word whenever you like. The game quietly tracks your statistics: games played, win percentage, current streak, best streak and a breakdown of how many guesses you usually need. It runs entirely in your browser, works on phone and desktop, and needs no install or sign-up.

Tips & strategy

  • Open with a word packed with common letters — AUDIO, CRANE, SLATE and RAISE all test lots of vowels at once.
  • Use your second guess to try five completely new letters rather than reusing the first word's letters.
  • Green means right letter and right spot; yellow means right letter, wrong spot; gray means the letter is not in the word.
  • Watch the keyboard colors — they remember every letter you have already confirmed or eliminated.
  • A yellow letter cannot stay in the same column, so deliberately move it somewhere new on your next try.
  • Do not waste a guess on a word that contains letters you have already greyed out.
  • Remember a word can repeat a letter — if a tile is gray but the letter shows green elsewhere, the word may still use it twice.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Word Guess?

Type any real five-letter word and press Enter. The tiles flip to show colors: green for a correct letter in the correct spot, yellow for a correct letter in the wrong spot, gray for a letter not in the word. Use the clues to find the secret word within six guesses.

What do the tile colors mean?

Green means the letter is exactly right — correct letter, correct position. Yellow means the letter is in the hidden word but you placed it in the wrong column. Gray means the letter does not appear in the word at all.

How many guesses do I get?

You have six guesses to find the word. If you do not solve it by the sixth row, the game reveals the answer so you can learn it for next time.

Why was my word rejected?

A guess must be exactly five letters long and must be a recognized word in the game's dictionary. Random letter combinations and words of other lengths are not accepted, so the row will shake instead of submitting.

Can the same letter appear twice?

Yes. Plenty of words use a letter more than once. The coloring handles duplicates carefully, so a letter can show green in one spot and gray in another within the same guess.

Is there a new word every day?

Word Guess is unlimited rather than once a day. Each game picks a fresh random word, and you can press New Word to start another one instantly, as many times as you want.

Does it keep my statistics?

Yes. Your games played, win percentage, current streak, best streak and guess distribution are saved in your browser. Open the stats button any time to see your record.
