About Mahjong Solitaire — Classic Tile Match Game Online
Mahjong Solitaire is a tile-matching puzzle built from the pieces of the centuries-old game of mahjong, but played alone and at your own pace. A pyramid of 144 tiles is laid out in three stacked layers, and your goal is to clear every last one by removing them two at a time.
Only 'free' tiles can be taken — a tile is free when nothing rests on top of it and at least one of its left or right edges is open. Tap a free tile, then tap another free tile that shows the same picture, and the matching pair vanishes. As tiles disappear, new ones are exposed and the board slowly opens up beneath your fingers.
It looks gentle, but Mahjong Solitaire rewards foresight. Every board this game deals can be solved, yet a careless match can bury the tile you needed. Plan a few moves ahead, keep your options open, and lean on the hint and shuffle buttons when the layout tightens around you.
Tips & strategy
Scan the whole board before matching — a free pair will still be there in a moment, so spend that moment looking for the better move.
Free tiles on the ends of long rows unlock the most new tiles; clearing them early keeps the board flexible.
When the same picture sits on three or four free tiles, think about which two to remove — the wrong pair can strand the others.
Work the tall stacks down early; tiles buried under the top layers are the hardest to reach later.
Use the hint button to learn which tiles are currently free, not only as a last resort.
If you are truly stuck, shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles so you can keep playing — but a fresh plan beats a lucky shuffle.
Undo is free and unlimited; step back and try a different order whenever a match feels wrong.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play Mahjong Solitaire?
Remove all 144 tiles by matching identical pairs. Tap one free tile, then tap a second free tile with the same picture, and the pair is cleared. Keep going until the board is empty.
What makes a tile 'free'?
A tile is free — and therefore playable — when no tile is stacked on top of it and either its left or its right side is unobstructed. Blocked tiles must wait until their neighbours are removed.
Which tiles match each other?
Two tiles match when they show exactly the same picture. The set has circles, bamboo, characters, winds, dragons and flowers — thirty-six designs, four of each.
Can every game be won?
Every board is generated to be solvable, so a win is always possible with careful play. Losing only happens when matches are made in an order that traps tiles — undo and try again.
What does the shuffle button do?
If no free tiles match, shuffle rearranges the pictures on the remaining tiles so you have a move again. Use it to escape a dead end.
Is Mahjong Solitaire the same as mahjong?
No. Traditional mahjong is a four-player game. Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player puzzle that borrows the beautiful tiles and asks you to clear a layout by matching pairs.
Do I need to download anything?
No. The game runs instantly in your browser on phone, tablet or desktop — free, with nothing to install.
