About 2048 — Classic Number Puzzle Online

2048 is a sliding-tile puzzle created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli in March 2014. Inspired by the earlier games Threes and 1024, it became a global phenomenon thanks to its deceptively simple rules and surprising depth.

The game runs on a 4×4 grid. You start with two numbered tiles and slide them in one of four directions. Every time two tiles with the same number collide they merge into a single tile worth double — two 2s become a 4, two 4s become an 8, and so on. After each swipe a new 2 or 4 appears in a random empty cell.

Your goal is to combine tiles until one of them reaches 2048. Once you do, the game keeps going so you can chase 4096, 8192, or even higher. The catch: every move is permanent. There is no undo, and if you fill the board without any matching tiles left adjacent, the game ends.

Tips & strategy

  • Anchor your biggest tile in one corner — top-left or bottom-right — and never let it move out.
  • Build a descending chain along one edge so merges flow toward your anchor.
  • Avoid pressing the direction that would lift your anchor; vertical zig-zags break your structure.
  • New tiles spawn in random empty cells, so always leave room to maneuver.
  • Do not merge just because you can — sometimes a small free tile is more valuable than a forced combine.
  • When the board fills up, find the longest mergeable chain and collapse it in one direction.
  • Patience wins: reaching 2048 typically takes 200–400 moves, even for experts.
  • Chain merges on back-to-back moves to build the combo multiplier — each consecutive merging move scores more, so plan setups that pop several merges in a row.

Frequently asked questions

What is the combo multiplier?

Every move that merges at least one pair keeps your combo alive and raises the multiplier (×2, ×3, ×4…). Those merges score extra points. A move with no merge — or a long pause — resets the combo, so chaining merges back to back is the key to a high score.

How do you win at 2048?

Combine numbered tiles until one reaches the value 2048. You don't have to stop there — most players keep playing to reach higher tiles such as 4096 and 8192.

Is there an undo button?

No. Every move in 2048 is permanent. Pause and plan before each swipe; once a tile slides, you can't take it back.

Why is the game called 2048?

2048 is 2 to the eleventh power — the eleventh tile you can build by repeatedly doubling 2. Creator Gabriele Cirulli picked it as a satisfying milestone.

What's the highest possible tile on a 4×4 grid?

Theoretically 131072 (2^17), but reaching it is extraordinarily rare. Most strong players cap around 8192 or 16384.

Does my game save automatically?

Yes. Your current board and best score are stored in your browser, so closing the tab or refreshing the page won't lose your progress.

Can I play 2048 on mobile?

Yes. Swipe up, down, left, or right anywhere on the game board. Touch controls are responsive and the layout adapts to portrait phones.
