About Sliding Puzzle — Free 15 Puzzle Game to Play Online

The Sliding Puzzle — known to many as the 15 Puzzle — is a pocket-sized classic that has fascinated players since the 1870s. The board is a grid of numbered tiles with one space left empty. By sliding tiles into that gap one at a time, you rearrange the whole board until the numbers run in order. Simple to grasp, surprisingly hard to master.

Pick your challenge before you start. Easy is a 3×3 board with eight tiles, a gentle warm-up. Medium is the famous 4×4 board with fifteen tiles. Hard steps up to a 5×5 board with twenty-four tiles, where every move needs to be planned. Tap any tile in the same row or column as the empty space and the whole line slides together — it still counts as a single move.

The game tracks your move count and your time, and remembers your best — fewest-move — solve for each board size. Tiles glow green the instant they reach their final home, so you can always see your progress at a glance. There is nothing to install and no sign-up — just open the page and start sliding.

Tips & Strategy

  • Solve the puzzle row by row, top to bottom. Once a row is finished, never disturb it again.
  • Within a row, place the tiles left to right. Lock the leftmost ones first, then work toward the right edge.
  • The last two tiles of a row are the tricky part. Set them up as a pair in the corner, then rotate them into place together.
  • When only the bottom two rows are left, switch to solving them column by column instead of row by row.
  • Tap a far tile to slide a whole line at once — it is one move, so use it to reposition several tiles efficiently.
  • Watch the green tiles. They mark every tile already home, so you instantly see how close you are.
  • Fewer moves beat fast moves. The best score is the lowest move count, so think before you slide.
  • Solve efficiently to earn three stars and more coins. Save the coins to unlock new tile themes from the start menu.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do the stars, coins and themes work?

Each solve is rated one to three stars based on how few moves you used, and pays out coins — more stars and bigger boards pay more. Spend the coins on the start menu to unlock tile themes like Sunset, Grape or Carbon; your coins and unlocked themes are saved in your browser.

How do you play the Sliding Puzzle?

Slide numbered tiles into the single empty space to rearrange them. The goal is to order the numbers 1 upward, row by row, leaving the empty space in the bottom-right corner.

How do I move the tiles?

Tap any tile in the same row or column as the empty space and it slides toward the gap. Tapping a far tile slides every tile between it and the gap as one move. You can also use the arrow keys or swipe.

What do the difficulty levels change?

They change the board size: Easy is 3×3 with 8 tiles, Medium is the classic 4×4 with 15 tiles and Hard is 5×5 with 24 tiles. A bigger board means more tiles and a longer solve.

Is every shuffle solvable?

Yes. Each board is scrambled by sliding tiles from a solved state, so a valid solution always exists. You can never get an impossible puzzle.

What counts as a good score?

The game records the fewest moves you have used to solve each board size. Beating that move count is the main challenge — speed is tracked too, but the move count is the headline.

Do my best scores save?

Yes. Your best move count for each board size is stored in your browser and shown in the top corner. Clearing your browser data resets it.
