How to play

Tap a mole the moment it pops out of its hole. Gold moles are worth more. Don't tap the bombs — they cost you time. Score as much as you can in 60 seconds.

About Whack-a-Mole — Tap Fast Reflex Game

Whack-a-Mole began life as a fairground machine. The first cabinet, built in Japan in the mid-1970s as Mogura Taiji, gave players a soft mallet and a board full of mechanical moles that popped up at random. Hit them before they ducked back down. It was simple, loud, and instantly addictive — and it has been a staple of arcades and phones ever since.

This version keeps the format pure. A 3x3 field of holes, a 60-second clock, and moles that appear without warning. Tap a mole the instant it shows itself and you score. Wait too long and it drops back into the dark, gone.

Two twists keep you sharp. Golden moles are rare and worth five times a normal hit, so they are always worth lunging for. Bombs look nothing like a mole and must never be tapped — hit one and it blows five seconds straight off your clock.

Tips & strategy

  • Watch the whole board, not one hole. Moles appear at random, so keep your eyes loose and centred.
  • Tap, don't aim. Speed beats precision here — a fast imperfect tap scores, a slow careful one misses.
  • Always go for the golden mole. At fifty points it is worth five ordinary moles, and it never lasts long.
  • Train yourself to recognise the bomb shape instantly. A split-second hesitation is better than a five-second penalty.
  • The game speeds up as the clock runs down. Save your sharpest focus for the final twenty seconds.
  • If two moles are up at once, hit the one closer to ducking back down first.
  • Use your thumb on mobile and stay near the centre of the grid so every hole is an equal reach away.
  • Chain five quick hits in a row to ignite Frenzy: for five seconds every whack scores double, so keep the streak alive and don't let a bomb break it.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Whack-a-Mole?

Moles pop up from a 3x3 grid of holes. Tap a mole while it is up to score points. You have 60 seconds to score as much as you can.

What are the golden moles?

Golden moles are rare and worth 50 points — five times a normal mole's 10. They appear briefly, so tap them the moment you see one.

What happens if I tap a bomb?

Tapping a bomb costs you five seconds off the clock and flashes the screen red. Bombs look clearly different from moles — never tap them.

Does the game get harder?

Yes. As the 60 seconds tick down, moles appear more often and stay up for less time, so the last stretch is the most frantic.

Is there a penalty for missing a mole?

No. If a mole ducks back down before you tap it, you simply miss the points. Only tapping a bomb actually costs you.

Is my best score saved?

Yes. Your highest score is stored in your browser and shown each game, so you always have a target to beat.

What is Frenzy and how do coins work?

Chain five hits in a row and Frenzy ignites for five seconds, doubling every point on top of your combo. After each round you also bank one coin for every 100 points, and your coin total is saved in your browser across games.
