About Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe — Strategy Game vs CPU Online
Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe takes the game everyone knows and folds it into itself. The board is a 3×3 grid of nine smaller tic-tac-toe boards, and to win you must claim three of those small boards in a row. Suddenly the childhood game that always ends in a draw becomes a genuine battle of foresight, traps and tempo against the CPU.
The twist that makes it sing is where your move sends your opponent. Whichever cell you play inside a small board decides which board they must play in next — play the top-right square and they're forced into the top-right board. So every move is two decisions at once: the mark you make, and the board you hand over. Send your rival somewhere harmless, and avoid gifting them a board they can win.
It runs instantly in your browser on phone, tablet or desktop — no download, no sign-up, completely free. The active board is highlighted so you always know where you can play; just tap a cell. The CPU thinks a move ahead, grabbing boards and dodging gifts, so beating it means controlling where the game flows. Easy to learn, surprisingly deep to master.
Tips & strategy
Every move is really two: the square you take and the board you send your opponent to. Think about both before you tap.
Avoid sending your opponent to a board where they can immediately complete three in a row — that hands them a whole board for free.
Sending your opponent to an already-won or full board gives them a free choice of any board. Usually that's bad for you, so dodge it unless the free move is harmless.
Winning a small board is good, but winning the right one is better. Aim for boards that line up toward three-in-a-row on the big grid.
The centre board is powerful — it sits on four of the big winning lines. Fighting for it early often pays off.
Sometimes the strongest move isn't to win a board but to keep control of where play goes next. Tempo beats greed.
Watch the big grid as carefully as the small ones. A board you ignore can quietly become the CPU's third in a row.
Climb the ranks by winning on Hard and stacking a win streak — pick the difficulty that pushes you without going cold, since a single loss resets the streak.
Frequently asked questions
How do difficulty levels and ranks work?
Choose Easy, Medium or Hard on the Start screen. Easy plays loose moves, Medium uses the full one-move-ahead logic, and Hard looks further to punish mistakes. Wins, your current win streak, your best streak and a rank (Novice up to Grandmaster) are saved on your device — a loss resets the streak, so play the level that keeps you winning while improving.
How do I play Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe?
Tap a cell in the highlighted board to place your mark. The cell you choose sends the CPU to the matching small board for its turn. Win three cells in a row to claim a small board, and claim three small boards in a row to win the game.
Which board can I play in?
You must play in the board that matches the last cell your opponent played — that board is highlighted. If it's already won or completely full, you get a free move and may play in any open board.
How do I win the whole game?
Claim three small boards in a row — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — on the big 3×3 grid. You claim a small board by getting three of your marks in a row inside it.
What happens if a small board is a draw?
If a small board fills up with no three-in-a-row, it's neutral — it counts for neither player toward the big grid and can no longer be played in.
How strong is the CPU?
The CPU looks one move ahead: it takes boards it can win, blocks your wins, and avoids sending you somewhere you could win a board. It's a solid casual opponent — beat it by steering where the game goes.
Is Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe free and mobile-friendly?
Completely free, with no install or sign-up, and built mobile-first: the active board is clearly highlighted and cells are comfortably tappable on any screen size.
