About Connect Four — Beat the Computer Online
Connect Four is the vertical strategy game that turns a simple idea — drop a disc, make a line of four — into something genuinely deep. Milton Bradley sold the first plastic grid in 1974, though the underlying game is much older. Its lasting appeal is that the rules take five seconds to learn and a lifetime to truly master.
The board is a standing grid of seven columns and six rows. You and the computer take turns dropping discs; gravity pulls each one to the lowest free slot in the column you choose. The goal is to line up four of your own discs in a row — horizontally, vertically or on either diagonal.
What makes it sharp is the double threat. Strong play is not about chasing one line of four; it is about building positions where you threaten to win in two places at once, so your opponent can only block one. The computer here uses a minimax search to do exactly that — and to stop you doing it.
Tips & strategy
Take the centre column early. Discs in the middle take part in more possible four-in-a-rows than anywhere else.
Always scan for the opponent's three-in-a-row before making your own move — one missed block loses the game instantly.
Aim to create two threats at once. If you can complete a four in two different spots, a single block cannot save your opponent.
Watch the diagonals. They are the easiest lines to overlook and the easiest way to lose.
Think about what your move gives the opponent. Dropping a disc may hand them the slot directly above it.
Odd and even rows matter — control of certain row parities decides many endgames between equal players.
Start on Easy to learn the patterns, then step up. The Hard computer searches six moves ahead and punishes loose play.
Stack wins for a streak. Each win in a row pays more coins, and beating the Hard computer pays the most — bank enough to unlock every board theme.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play Connect Four?
Take turns dropping discs into the seven columns. Each disc falls to the lowest empty slot. The first player to line up four of their own discs in a row — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — wins.
How do I drop a disc?
Just tap or click the column you want. Your red disc drops into the lowest free slot of that column, then the computer takes its turn.
How strong is the computer?
The computer uses a minimax search with alpha-beta pruning. Easy looks two moves ahead, Medium four, and Hard six — enough to spot your threats and set up its own.
Does the computer always block my winning move?
On Medium and Hard, yes — its search is deep enough to see your immediate winning threats and block them. The way to win is to create two threats it cannot block at once.
Who goes first?
You always move first, playing the red discs. Going first is a genuine advantage in Connect Four, so use it.
Is my win-loss record saved?
Yes. Your wins, draws and losses against the computer are stored in your browser and add up across every game you play.
What are coins and themes for?
Every win earns coins — more for win streaks and for beating harder opponents. Spend them in the Themes shop to unlock alternate board and disc colours like Midnight, Sunset and Forest. Your coins, streak and unlocks are saved in your browser.
